STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

The Emmaus Way

ENGAGED STUDENTS

At Emmaus, engagement is cultivated intentionally-  it is not left to chance. We believe that student engagement  is crucial because it directly improves academic outcomes, reduces disruptive behaviour, and fosters a positive, safe, and supportive learning environment. It enhances student motivation, boosts retention of information, and encourages a sense of belonging, which is vital for sustained learning and attendance.

High expectations + explicit teaching + strong relationships + safe, orderly environments.

TEACHING RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOUR

In line with the Vision for Engagement from Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools, we explicitly teach respectful behaviour as part of our core curriculum. We believe positive behaviour is learned, modelled and practised. Through the explicit teaching of shared routines and clear expectations, we create calm, predictable and orderly learning environments where students feel safe and ready to learn. Students are supported to understand what respect looks like in action and why it matters. By pairing high expectations with strong relationships, guided practice and restorative conversations, we help students develop self-regulation, responsibility and empathy - ensuring every child can learn, grow and belong.

FOSTERING BELONGING

Belonging is the heartbeat of our community. Guided by the MACS Vision for Engagement we recognise every student as a person created in the image of God, possessing an inherent dignity that deserves to be nurtured and celebrated. We are committed to ensuring that every child feels a deep sense of connection, moving beyond instruction to create a "common home" where students are empowered to bring their whole selves to their learning journey. We foster this environment through: • Inclusive Community: Celebrating the diverse gifts and stories of every family with a spirit of hospitality. • Relational Pedagogy: Prioritising strong, supportive relationships so students feel safe to grow. • Student Agency: Providing meaningful opportunities for learners to lead and shape our school culture. • Spiritual Nourishment: Connecting students to a larger purpose through prayer, liturgy, and our commitment to Laudato si’. By grounding our daily interactions in empathy and integrity, we ensure Emmaus is a place where every learner can truly belong, believe, and become.

FOCUSING ON ATTENDANCE

We believe that for a student to truly flourish—spiritually, socially, and academically—they must first be present within our community. Attendance is not just a matter of compliance; it is the essential doorway to belonging and engagement. • Why Attendance Matters: A Sense of Belonging: Regular presence allows students to engage in the daily rituals of prayer, play, and peer connection that build their identity within our community. • Relational Growth: Flourishing occurs through consistent relationships; being at school ensures every child is known, valued, and supported by their teachers and peers. • Learning Continuity: The curriculum is a cumulative journey; consistent attendance prevents gaps in understanding and builds the confidence needed to engage deeply. • Developing Virtues: Showing up each day fosters the habits of commitment and resilience, preparing students to be active, conscious citizens of the future.

PROMOTING MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING

At Emmaus, student wellbeing is central to a thriving learning community. We intentionally promote positive mental health through dedicated wellbeing lessons and daily connection time within each class, ensuring every child feels seen, heard and supported. A wide range of structured and unstructured play opportunities further nurture social connection, confidence and resilience. Students can participate in lunchtime clubs such as choir, Chill Zone, Dungeons & Dragons and staff-led sports games. They also enjoy loose parts play, nature play in our Emmaus Forest, tree climbing, the Gaga Pit and our adventure playground. By providing varied opportunities for connection, creativity, movement and rest, we support the whole child and create a community where wellbeing and belonging flourish.

ENABLING MOTIVATION

To enable student motivation, we adopt a consistent, whole-school approach that reduces anxiety through clear routines and high expectations. We prioritise psychological safety, creating an environment where students feel secure taking intellectual risks and tracking their own visible progress. By actively managing technology to reduce digital distractions and fostering strong, trust-based partnerships with families, we ensure our learners remain focused, supported, and deeply engaged in their educational journey.

TARGETING OF INDIVIDUAL NEEDS

At Emmaus, we use a framework called Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to ensure every child gets exactly what they need to thrive. Think of it as a layered safety net that catches students before they fall behind and stretches to challenge those ready to fly. Instead of a "one-size-fits-all" approach, MTSS allows us to provide three levels of support: • Tier 1: High-Quality Learning for All This is the foundation. Every student receives evidence-based, high-quality instruction in their classroom every day. Our consistent routines and clear expectations create a strong base for everyone. • Tier 2: Targeted Small Groups Sometimes, a student needs a little extra help with a specific skill—like a phonics rule or a math concept. We provide short-term, focused support in small groups to help them "catch up" and move back to Tier 1 with confidence. • Tier 3: Intensive Individual Support For students who need more significant adjustments or specialised intervention, we provide highly individualised plans. This ensures that diverse learning needs never stand in the way of a child's ability to participate fully in our school life. By using this model, we move away from "waiting for a student to fail" and instead move toward "proactive support," ensuring that every learner at Emmaus is seen, heard, and helped.
